After 85 years, Lakeview Golf Course in Burnham continues to provide traditional experience
BURNHAM, Maine - With the development and growth in the construction of golf courses over the last century, golfers may be more prone to look for courses with a blend of style, length and challenge.
There used to be a time where the luxury of such courses were few and far between and players were forced to play more traditional courses that stretch across acres of plains or flatlands.
Those courses may seem outdated, but some, like Lakeview Golf Course, continue to provide excitement within its traditional format.
Established in 1927 by Wilber and Pappy Reynolds, Lakeview’s nine-hole course was built on the flatlands along the banks of Unity Pond and gives locals and vacationers to Waldo County a course tailored for both new and experienced golfers.
“This course is built for newer to average golfers, but there are plenty of challenges for the higher level golfers to overcome,” said Susie Furrow, a member of the Reynolds family who took over the family’s course in 2010 with her sisters, Tammy George and Laurie Turner.
Along with their husbands, the Reynolds sisters have continued the growth of the course by making plenty of renovations.

Trump's challenge to the world's greatest golf courses
(CNN) - Hailed as the "world's greatest golf course" by its owner before it had even opened, Trump International Links has a lot to live up to.
The statement would have been ridiculed by the golfing community had it not been made by a man who has pumped $150 million into his dream to date, with plans to spend over $1 billion by the time the controversial Scottish project is completed.
It has already bulldozed past environmentalists' concerns, but Donald Trump is reluctant to continue development due to a planned offshore wind farm.
The fact that some of the key names in European golf attended this month's opening - surrounded by bagpipers and the miles of towering sand dunes along its Aberdeenshire coast site - is testament to the power of his brand.
The American billionaire owns a dozen luxury golf resorts - including Florida's faded Doral and its renowned "Blue Monster" course which he plans to renovate - but can his UK venture be considered a contender for top spot so early on?
Blowing in the wind? Trump threatens to ditch $1B Scottish golf resort
Of course, criteria for judging the "greatest" vary from golfer to golfer, with emphasis ranging from degree of challenge to spectacular views or history.

Citizen Nine: Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course
If there’s one area golf course that demands accuracy off the tees, it has to be Bartley Cavanaugh. Located in the small Sacramento River community of Freeport, Bartley Cavanaugh is a links course designed by Perry Dye, the son of famed golf course designer Pete Dye.
Just like his father’s layouts around the country, the younger Dye has lined each fairway with mounds and made the hitting areas of most fairways a little higher than the rough.
Plus, he’s installed railroad ties to define the water hazards and has placed some pock-hole bunkers next to a few greens to give the golfer the feel of playing an old Scottish course.
Perry designed a few holes at Bartley Cavanaugh almost exactly like his father’s signature holes found at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. The 17th hole, a par-3 of just 85 yards in length, is almost a spitting image of Sawgrass’ famed island green hole.
And just like Sawgrass’ finishing hole, No. 18 at Bartley Cavanaugh is a narrow par-4 with water along the entire left side, high mounds along the right side and has a green fronted by a railroad tie wall.
In its early days, Bartley Cavanaugh had the look of a Scottish links, but 17 years later, the trees have grown and now that has made it a more difficult course to play.
Located alongside I-5 north of Elk Grove, Bartley Cavanaugh is squeezed into a 90-acre tract which makes the total length of the course just under 5,800 yards from the blue tees.

Played the Tips at Bethpage Black
So I played the back part of ever back tee box (blue tees weren’t out so we decided to play the tips), course probably played around 7700yds. On the card its right around 7500 but they added in new tee boxes behind a few of the posts. I shot 83 and it came up as a 3 handicap on the ghin system which I found hard to believe.
I think I had more 6's on my card then I have ever had, I think 5 of them, lol. It was a pretty ugly round for me especially with some major swing problems occurring due to my swing being too long. Slope rating is a 152 and 78.1 rating.
I have played the black course tons of times considering I grew up in the area but I never played the tips. Played with an assistant pro from one of the courses out east on long island and he shot 76.
Great round had by all, even the caddy said he hadn’t seen anyone play 3 of the tee boxes we played on some of the holes all season.
FYI, the course was in immaculate shape and all the grandstands were up for the Barclays tournament occurring there in August, course closes august 6th for the full prep.
The NY state open was just the 17th thru the 19th so everything was in tip top shape. The rough was also ridiculously thick, 6+ inch status, besides the fescue I was in several times also.
My feet and legs were soar by the end of the round. Great experience besides almost getting hit by a club thrown by one of the other two singles that joined up. Just wanted to share with the community.
This is the first season back after a 5 year layoff, besides the 2 outings I would play in a year, looking to play some amateur tournaments next season, so this was my year from prep and practice. Overall great day.
